Cut Above!
Date: Oct 21, 2009
Entry: A local six-year old girl got a special haircut for her first day of school at Armstrong Elementary School. The youngest opted for a short haircut and donated her long locks to make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to chemotheraphy treatment for cancer. Angela King of Country Comfort Esthetics provided the haircut, while family members provide moral support. The six-year old only shed locks, not tears and is excited to know that her hair will make another child smile.

A Golden Jubilee
Date: Oct 21, 2009
Entry: It's a celebration that will be long remembered. The Kindale Developmental Association celebrated it's golden Jubilee October 3 and hundreds of community members participated in the event, including those instrumental in the creation of Kindale. Also unveilled was 'You Are My Friend' a comprehensive history book on the organization, written by local author Shirley Campbell. The title of the book is based on a drawing by Gary Boss, a student in the first Kindale class in 1959. Also included is a large photo of his mother Lydia Boss. Mrs.Boss, the community's public health nurse in the 1950' identified about 12 children with developmental disabilities being cared for at home instead of being institutionalized, as was the practice at that time. Mrs.Boss suggested building a school to address this need and the Armstrong Kinsmen Club embraced the idea. They voted unanimously to build the school after the Armstrong School District provided land adjacent to Armstrong Elementary School. The school eventually became a community project. A local sawmill donated materials, tradesmen worked for nothing, and Kinsmen, Lions and community members donated time. A well built building that now houses Armstrong Pre-School as Kindale Developmental Centre has outgrown it's original building and now is located in the downtown core. The 50th Anniversary included a free pancake breakfast, book signing, entertainment ending with dinner and auction

From Storyteller to Storywriter
Date: Aug 10, 2009
Entry: It is his biggest accomplishment in a life full of stuggles - but he faced the challenge and at the age of 59, Mr. C learned to read! At first, he felt he was maybe too old, but as he discovered - it is never too late. "I make a good example and I'm not suffering as much." Mr. C found jobs where he got away with not reading and writing, relying on others to help write letters and fill in time sheets - until he faced a job that required a computer.
His introduction to literacy tutoring came through a bartering exchange program. At first, his goal was simply to fill out forms and he never dreamed of doing more than that, but he soon wanted more. Once he discovered Literacy Canada and began working with trained tutors, Mr. C set a new goal - to be a storyteller as were his mother and grandmother before him. He now has two suitcases full of stories to share, but one of his proudest moments was writing a letter to his sister - after 46 years - who was moved to tears.
Mr. C has one story left to tell - his own. And he plans to donate the proceeds from his life story to adult literacy efforts in Canada. Congratulation on achieving this goal and being such a great role model for others.

Entry: The RCMP Foundation presented a cheque in the amount of $3,500 to the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce in support of the 2009 - 2010 Active Community, Safe Community Program.
