Knights clean house
Date: Dec 7, 2009
Entry: The North Okanagan Knights welcomed new head coach Dave Dupas to Armstrong with a 9-5 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League win over the Penticton Lakers Saturday night.
Dupas, who coached the Major Midget Okanagan Rockets last year and began this season with the BCHL Williams Lake Timberwolves, replaced Eddie Johnstone.
The Knights, an expansion franchise, improved to 4-21-0-2, third-last in the 17-team league.
“I appreciate everything Eddie did for the hockey club, and I enjoyed getting to know him,” said Knights’ president Bill Greene, who handed over GM duties to vice-president Chuck Gallacher of Lake Country.
The rookie-laden Knights competed for the most part, but lost 9-0 last Wednesday to the Chase Chiefs and 7-0 to the host Princeton Posse Friday night (first game without Johnstone).
“I really, really enjoyed working with the kids,” said Johnstone, a 55-year-old former NHL all-star winger who guided the Vernon Lakers to back-to-back Centennial Cup wins in 1990-91.
“I’m disappointed I didn’t get the chance to carry on. I think we had 14 one-goal losses so winning some of those would have helped.
“I tried to get them going in the right direction and teach them how to win, and it was coming.”
First star Colin Minardi supplied 3+1 for the Knights, while Bryon Maxwell scored twice and singles came from Trevor Fitzgerald (22nd), Mike Mace, Andrew Nichols and Reece Matheson. Shawn Holliday had two helpers.
Chris Hurry recorded 37 saves for the win.
Viper prospect Brendan Persley, Colton Schell, Ken Whitford, Hayden Trupp and Branden Redschlag replied for the Lakers, who dipped to 7-19-0-2.
The Knights host the Sicamous Eagles tonight at Nor-Val Sports Centre (7:00).
Vernon’s Tyler Steel recorded 19 saves Saturday as the Eagles fell 4-3 to host Princeton.
Vernon’s Riley Spraggs bagged 1+2 and earned third star as the Revelstoke Grizzlies upended the Chase Chiefs 5-3.

Local rinks advance
Date: Dec 7, 2009
Entry: History was made last weekend in Barriere as two Armstrong Curling Club teams secured berths in the provincials, Dec. 27-30, in Victoria.
The local junior men’s team of skip Nick Cliff, third Michael King, second Brad Yasinski, lead Greg Brown, and alternate Brendan Cliff locked up provincial spots at the regional playdowns Saturday night.
The junior women’s team of skip Kayla Gunner, third Kate Bulmer, second Zetteh Gunner and lead Jasmine Brosseau, with coaching by Bernard Brosseau, earned a berth on Sunday afternoon.
In their opening game against Chad Kyllo’s Vernon rink, the Cliff team had to sub in their alternate, 13-year-old Brendan Cliff, when their lead had to rush to Kamloops to replace a torn contact lens. The Kyllo team took control of the game early, and never looked back with the Cliff rink conceding defeat after the seventh end.
In a rather unusual draw, the six Interior teams vied for four berths at the provincials so losers from the morning draw waited to play the losers of the afternoon draw for a chance at the remaining two B.C. berths.
Fortunately for the Cliff rink, everything came together at the right time, starting with a successful draw-to-the-button to decide who had the hammer in the first end.
This game was a bit of a stretch for coach Farynuk, who was also coaching the opposition Gordon Forster team of Enderby. The Cliff rink used the hammer advantage to score three points in the first end. By the fifth-end break, the Cliff rink was up by six points. The Forster squad didn’t give up, and with a steal of three in nine, were only behind by two points going into the 10th end.
In the 10th, Cliff had the hammer but found himself facing three biting opposition rocks – enough to pull off a comeback win – when he prepared to throw his final rock.
It was make the eight foot, or go home and Cliff placed his rock in the four-foot circle to secure the 10-7 win, and the final B.C. berth.
Jon Gardner of Vernon also qualified for the provincials, losing 8-4 to Forster before stopping Kyllo 6-3 in the B final. Third Mike Longworth and front enders Tyler Vandenberghe and Kyle Anderson backed Gardner.
The six junior women’s teams played for only two provincial berths. Gunner started by winning a hard-fought game on Saturday morning against Kristi Leschuk of Salmon Arm. Up only one point going into the 10th end, the Gunner rink was able to maintain a heavy guard on their shot rock stealing one point to clinch the win.
The Gunner rink then went on to play the very experienced Alyssa Kyllo rink of Kamloops (three provincial appearances, including a silver medal at the 2008 B.C. Winter Games) for a fast-paced game of positioning, peels, double take-outs and rollbacks with Gunner winning 7-6.
The two wins put Gunner into a first-place tie with the Jenn Gerow rink of Salmon Arm, another experienced team with four B.C. appearances.
Gerow, who curls with Gunner in a Vernon Super League, capitalized on critical misses in the seventh end to steal two and pull into control of the game. Gunner battled back but was forced to concede in the 10th end.
The Gunner rink went on to play Corryn Brown of Kamloops in the final game. They blanked two of the first four ends before Gunner set up a guard for a steal of two points in the fifth end.
They managed another steal in the sixth, forced Brown to take one point in the seventh and take hammer in the eighth. Brown played carefully and held the Gunner rink to one point in the eighth, peeled expertly in the ninth to retain the hammer in the final end but conceded when the Gunner rink ran them out of rocks for a 5-2 win.
Gerow, backed by Kelsey Schwindt, Carly Kirby and Vanessa Samborsky, grabbed one of the provincial berths. Cliff and Gunner will represent Pleasant Valley Secondary at the upcoming B.C. High School regional playdowns, Dec. 12-13, in Kelowna.
Gunner, who beat Gardner earlier in the Capri Insurance Super League, will face the boys tonight at the Vernon Curling Club. Losers buy dinner at Boston Pizza.

This year, as a result of placing first last year, is participating in the Winners Circle this year. We are thrilled to have the judges visit and evaluate Armstrong. This doesn't mean more lights and glitz, but more promotion of the good things that happen in the community from November 1 - March 31, including recreation, volunteer efforts, festive season events, winter pleasures, goodwill program, visual presentation, tourism and prmotion. Two judges - Odette Sabourin-Dumais of Montreal and Ted Zarundy of Brampton, Ontario will evaluate the community on five criteria before submitting their decision to the WinterLights Celebration. The judges decision will be announced at the national conference to be held in Charlottetown, PEI in March. Way to go Armstrong!!

Horsey Ladies Raise $8,800 at Sold Out Event
Date: Dec 7, 2009
Entry: The 12th Annual North Okanagan Horsey Ladies Charity Auction took place at Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club on November 20. The North Okanagan Horsey Ladies is not a club, nor a registered society; they are just a group of gals that gather once a year to celebrate Christmas and their love of horses. Any woman is invited to attend – there is no membership as some seem to think.
As well as being a fundraiser, the evening also lends itself to socializing and networking. Over dinner, any gal is invited to take over the mic and introduce their business or charity of interest. Organizers have chosen not to offer a mini trade show where gals can set up a table and display their business or horsey products. “This would take away from our main purpose, to socialize, to network, but more importantly fundraise. Although we do offer one table that the gals can put their brochures or cards on for networking, but that’s it, there’s just no room.” says committee chair Nancy Roman.
What started years ago with just a few gals going out for a Christmas dinner of 8 has blossomed into a sold out event each year with 132 gals in 2009. “And we keep growing, judging by this year’s waiting list.”
This is the eighth year that they have made it a fundraising event, of which all proceeds are given to a local registered charity that the horsey gals vote on that evening. “We never know in advance which charity will win – it’s up to the group to decide.”
The 2009 Charity of Choice was tied with votes for B.C. Interior Horse Rescue and North Okanagan Therapeutic Riding Association; which will split the proceeds of $8,800; a record-breaking year!.
As of this date, the Horsey Ladies have raised over $33,400.00 through Silent and Chinese (loonie) Auctions. Previous recipients have included: Equine Assisted Therapy (Kelowna); North Okanagan Therapeutic Riding Association; Vernon SPCA; Shuswap SPCA, and Vernon Women’s Transition House - Equine Assisted Therapy (2008 recipient of over $6,300.00).
“It is through the numerous donations and sponsorships of the businesses and individuals that have made this event a success each year. A big thank you goes out to all 164 contributors to our 2009 event; your generosity is very much appreciated. New this year, we’ve created a Horsey Ladies logo and if you purchase an item with our logo on it at Diana’s Monogramming in Armstrong; they will donate 20% of the purchase price towards our charity of choice tallied up in September 2010. Thank you to the stores that sell the tickets for us each year; The Paddock Tack & Togs (Vernon), Country West Supply (Armstrong) and Touch A Texas (Salmon Arm). They sell for us, they donate, and their (horsey gals) staff attend.”

My Favorite Sport To Do In Armstrong
Date: Dec 4, 2009
Entry: I have a few different sports I like to do in Armstrong, but swimming is my favorite. I love going to the pool and jumping off the diving board, feeling the refreshing water surround me. When I open my eyes underwater, it seems like I am free, and everything around me has faded. I usually use goggles for swimming, but every once in a while, I take them off. What I do then is go to the wall of the deep end of the pool, and jet myself off and into the water. I love doing that.
When I swim, I feel like there is freedom surrounding me. When I am underwater, I feel like there are no worries in the world, no matters, and no one around me. It is a feeling that i can't describe. Feeling so alive, so free is what i love about swimming. Next year, there is going to be a new pool. the pool will have a waterslide, and two diving boards: a tall one and a low-down one. I am so excited! For the first while, it'll probably be pretty busy there. But, oh well. I just can't wait.
Thanks fo taking the time to read my story!

There are a Lot of sports that I like in Armstrong. I like horse back riding and fishing and you can't do those in crowded places. I also like extreme sports.
The sports in winter that are fun are skating on the nearby lakes, playing hockey, tubing, skiing, and snowboarding. We get a lot of snow which makes these games easier and I've heard that the nearby lakes freeze so we can skate and play hockey.
The sports in summer I like are water skiing, fishing, Horse back riding, and baseball. I like all of these for some reson but I can't explain why.
I like Armstrong and the sporting opportunities it provides.

I like baseball its really fun to play. Last year in gym we played baseball with a racket and a tennis ball. It was sooooooooo fun. I really hope I get to play it again.
The other sport I like is basketball. I love basketball. Last year I played on the schools basketball team we won every game! The main reason I like basketball is because if you keep on trying and practice a lot you will get really good at basketball.

Entry: Armstrong is a great community because there are lots of different sports. Swimming is a fun sport to do in Armstrong there are many reasons why, one of them is getting a rush when jumping off the diving board. Right now there is a better pool being built in Armstrong. I can't wait. :D
Dancing is lots of fun. When I was little I used to dance in Armstrong. I don't remember all that much of it, but what I do remember was that you could bring a friend with you that didn't take dance, and every time you would get a sticker. But I was 4-6 years old, so it would be different if I went again.
The Skating program in Armstrong is also fun, especially on Fridays becuase everyone goes. There are slide shows and you get to pick music you want to listen to. They even have a concession. You can also skate on Sundays and lots of hockey games go on at that arena.

Entry: I like Armstrong sports because there are so many opportunities for sports. Like at 'Fabulous Friday' there is skating, a great place to hang out with friends, and very cheap, so you don't lose lots of money. And in the team sports, everyone actually plays like a team. They are fair, and are good sports. The new pool is coming in the summer and I can't wait. The best feeling in the world is the water flowing through your hair, when you jump off the diving board.
So my conclusion is that Armstrong is a great communtity for sports. If you love sports, and small towns, Armstrong is the place to go!

Entry: I like living in Armstrong because it’s still a small town but has a lot of fun things to do in it as well. I like being able to stay in my own town to go skating or to play baseball or soccer or whatever sport I choose to do. I don’t want to have to go to Vernon or Salmon Arm to do these things because it’s too far and I’m not always able to go.
I wished we had gotten a year round swimming pool in Armstrong, it would be nice to go swimming more often. I do enjoy the new arena that was built. My brother and I go skating every Friday. My brother plays Lacrosse and Hockey at the arenas in Armstrong.
I think it’s important that kids my age and of all ages have an opportunity to be involved in various types of sporting activities. If you are interested in sports then you will spend less time playing video games, watching TV and being unhealthy. I hope that Armstrong gets the support it needs so that me, my friends, and my family can continue to enjoy being active and support our own community.
