Falling In Love
Date: Dec 9, 2009
Entry: Having moved to the community of Armstrong only months ago. I have increasingly become enchanted. Not only for it's beautiful country feel and setting- but it's the people! Whether they are out walking along well known routes, or gardening, or playing in the local park. The smiles are there. The evening I knew I was in love was Christmas Light Up on November 26th. I was driving the decorated Kindale truck in the Christmas parade. Young and old alike lined the route - waving and wishing me a Merry Christmas. The emotion came in lapping waves each time as I called out in response with waving, smiling, honking and "Happy Christmas!!" Sometime during the route I said to myself "I am loving driving in my community's Christmas parade"..... MY community. I have fallen in love with my home of Armstrong.

Armstrong bells to ring over climate change
Date: Dec 9, 2009
Entry: It won’t just be the Hunchback of Notre Dame hearing the bells on Sunday. Three Armstrong churches are joining other religious organizations, both locally and worldwide, to ring their tower bells 350 times to recognize and fight against climate change and the deteriorating ozone layer. The World Council of Churches and the churches of Copenhagen, Denmark, where international climate change talks are taking place, are inviting all churches across the globe to ring bells for climate justice.
“For thousands of years, church bells have been rung as a call to action and to warn people of danger,” said Rev. Bari Castle, with Zion United Church, which will be participating in the bell-ringing event in Armstrong. “The amount of C02 (carbon dioxide) in 1982 was 250 parts per million. Now it’s over 380 parts per million. Scientists tell us the safe rate is 350. “Unless we are able to rapidly reduce, we put creation at risk,” said Castle.
The Copenhagen Summit, which will formulate a new treaty on climate change, will be attended by world leaders, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper and President Barack Obama.
Also ringing their bells Sunday in Armstrong will be St. James Anglican Church and St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Parish.

Legion Updates Cenotaph
Date: Dec 9, 2009
Entry: The Armstrong Royal Canadian Legion branch is spell-checking the cenotaph at Memorial Park. The branch’s memorial committee has begun a project that aims to correct some misspellings of Armstrong-area soldiers who died in the two world wars, and add names of soldiers missing from the monument.
Len Gamble, a legion member who sits on the memorial committee, approached Armstrong council with a request for support for the project, which was unanimously granted. Gamble said the cenotaph currently has 56 names of Armstrong soldiers who died in the First World War, but while doing research for his book, So Far From Home, written with help from Linda Neden and Marc Tremblay, which looks at the men who died in the conflict, Gamble found six more men who should be added to the monument. “They met the criteria so they should be added,” said Gamble. “We also found one that certainly served in the First World War but survived it, and his name was put on by some kind of mistake so that name should be deleted.” That would make 61 names that should be on the monument. There are 27 names on the cenotaph remembering those area soldiers who died in the Second World War, but Gamble, who is presently working on another book commemorating the area men who died in that war, said continuous research showed that 12 more names should be added. The memorial committee hopes to raise money for the project, but Gamble said it is not at the fundraising stage just yet. “I’ve contacted the local funeral home and they are getting quotes for the replacement of the bronze plaques, as well as quotes for engraving names on a granite slab so they wouldn’t be subject to erosion,” said Gamble. “We’re waiting on getting those figures. We have some money available from the Canadian legion memorial update fund, which is used for keeping memorials in good shape. Then we’ll have to raise some money to finish it up.” The Armstrong legion’s memorial committee has also applied to a provincial body to add the names of the men who died in the First World War to the Memorial Mountain monument east of Armstrong. Presently, only the names of those who died in the Second World War are on the memorial. The 39 area men who died in the Second World War will be remembered in Armstrong’s annual Christmas candlelight ceremony in Memorial Park Dec. 23 at 4 p.m. “Each Christmas season, we remember the servicement from Armstrong, Spallumcheen and surrounding areas who died in the Second World War,” said Gamble. “We will be lighting a candle for each of the 39 men.” The ceremony is held regardless of weather, and takes about 30 minutes. Everyone is welcome, and reminded to dress warmly.

What's so Great About Armstrong?
Date: Dec 9, 2009
Entry: Armstrong is a beautiful town; it has many things to offer such as, golfing, swimming, biking, dancing and much more! One of the main things that Armstrong has to offer is the I.P.E. I think the I.P.E. is the best thing Armstrong has. Because there are animals, rides, booths and concession! Another thing is the new pool, it is not open yet but it will have a slide and a diving board and it will probably just be nicer than the old one because the old one has been there for a really long time and it is basically falling to pieces. In the winter most people go to Fabulous Friday. At Fabulous Friday you can go skating at the Armstrong Skating Rink for only 4$. At fabulous Friday you can skate for 2 hours. Another nice thing in Armstrong is the dance companies, my favorite one is the Susan Paisley School of Dance, because I am in it. Another great attraction is the Len Wood Middle School Productions, last year are school did Annie. Most of these shows turn out pretty good because Annie got sold out. This year the school is doing Beauty and the Beast, maybe this one will turn out like Annie.

Armstrong, my home

Entry:
Armstrong is my home and is magnificent for many reasons for example
This town has BC’s best cheeses and the some of the best ice cream I’ve ever Tasted. The reason I think you should choose to give Armstrong the money is Because It is a sweet homey town that all the people in Armstrong love and I’m 100 % Positive we will use the money for good uses and to help the Armstrong pool get finished, because I think they would really appreciate it but if you don’t get us the money well you know a decision is a decision and we will all be disappointed but you can do what you think is right . You im sayin is you should be proud to give Armstrong the money and I think it would be right to give Armstrong the check or cash because you would be proud. So enough with that part of this letter I can give you 5 different reasons you should give Armstrong that cash or check:
1. The money will be used for a good cause
2. some of the money could be used for helping people
3. maybe it will be used in charities
4. it could help some stores that are going out of business
5. and last it could help set up and pay for the IPE next year!
Sincerely a student from Len wood Armstrong.

My Home

Ever since I was little I had always thought of the farming community, commonly thought of as simply Armstrong Spallumacheen, British Columbia.
OK… so maybe Armstrong isn’t the most famous town in B.C. mainly being overshadowed by its neighbours Enderby, Salmon Arm, to the north, Falkland to the west, and Vernon and Kelowna to the south. But I don’t care if Armstrong isn’t as famous as its roommates, but to me it’s my home
Apart from my protests about fame and glory, this little town as many ways to stand out in our map of the world without my help, being only twelve years old at the moment, it has one trick up its sleeve (three letters, two guesses!) I.P.E!
Happening only once a year bundled up into one week full of loud noise, junk food, and tourists the I.P.E. (Interior Province Expiation) is made up in just two words “Tourist Trap”
Made up of a mix of hard work, and determination, the I.P.E. is home to one of the Okanogan’s finest celebrations.
Now normally I’d have this huge rant on the ups and downs of the I.P.E. But I’m going to let you figure out the joy of this event by going to see it yourself (hint, hint, nudge, nudge, poke, poke)
Complete with four schools (Armstrong Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, Len Wood Middle, and Pleasant Valley Secondary School, formally Armstrong Secondary School) Two gas stations (Esso, and Armstrong Co-op) Three or so malls, Four churches, two sports arenas, houses, Centennial Park, Bars (The Branding Iron, Blue Hotel, Roses’ Pub) and many more!
One of my favourite things to do with spare time is the many physical activities this town possesses. Anything from baseball, to tennis, to even, hockey this town has it. My all time favourite sport is football (soccer) which is easily made possible to play as the park’s wide range makes a fantastic soccer pitch. My second favourite sport volleyball is also made real with the four school competitions!
I really hope people took the time to read my “not the best story ever” article, but I really hope you took it to heart.
One of my favourite things to

Entry: In Armstrong you can do many things, two of the famous tour locations are, the local cheese factory, where the very best cheese is created. Another great attraction in the small town of Armstrong is the I.P.E (interior provincial exhibition). There are more things that make this town awesome, but those are two of the best.
We have four schools, Highland Park elementary, A.E .S, also known as Armstrong elementary school, or the old brick school, L.W.M.S, or Len Wood Middle School, and the last school, P.V.S.S., also known as Pleasant Valley Secondary School, the high school.
Some of Armstrong’s neighbours are Lumby, Falkland, Vernon, Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Kamloops, Sicamous, and Enderby.
We have a local library, grocery store, 7-11, Mc. Donalds, dollar store, video store, home hardware, bargain bin, general store, train station, post office, and car wash. And of course, a cop station.
Armstrong also has after school dancing in centennial hall, and some street dances. You can enter in everything from hip-hop to ballet. There is also a girls and boys club in Armstrong, for activities for different ages, so everyone can be active. We also have a curling club if you’re for curling.
There are 10 churches in our little town of Armstrong. That is all that is in our little town of Armstrong for everyone, anytime.
