Environmental Sustainability
Date: Dec 16, 2009
Entry: Education is a key on the human side to recognizing and acting in favor of the planet toward the obtrusive footprint we are causing in this now modern world. I believe our community believes that thinking.
The local forestry corporation in our community started in 1993 a class display of “The Logger’s Side of the Story” at the local fair winning best educational display for at least 10 years. That was a very exciting time in my career. The display is no longer a fair venue but jobs for students spawned from those days at a poplar plantation project irrigated with municipal effluent on city owned property. Today, that 5 acres is a stooling bed, (nursery), and trees in rows watered with organic wastes from local industrial processing operations. There are no students employed, but the opportunity exists. Also today, after Government funding ended; (2002), Armstrong/ Spallumcheen Environmental Trust was started up to provide fund raisers for local students pursuing a career in environmental learning. (www.asetbc.ca)
In 2005, (through my company started in 2004), I started a poplar phytoremediation plantation installation at the local landfill site to address a leachate problem there. My acquired knowledge through my attempt to apply a ground water protection plan in Spallumcheen, (started in 1998), coupled with forestry experience made the project a fit. Our local Regional District and local politicians can be commended for supporting such a project. Atmospheric carbon sequestration, water protection, noise and dust control, aesthetics and future dollar value all figured in to give the project a go ahead. Capacity for leachate is now available because of the phyto installation usage. (www.prsi.ca) (Please note the 5 year review).
Today, my work is focusing on carbon sequestration, cap and trade and carbon trade emerging industry. There have been interesting and possible enquirers, but hedge row started trees seems to be the present main direction providing some returns for work performed.

A taste of Scotland
Date: Dec 16, 2009
Entry: Roy Ferguson is on a mission to demystify the world of Scotch whisky, one dram at a time. Ferguson, who grew up near Aberdeen on the east coast of Scotland, moved to Armstrong nearly four years ago, and he knows his malts like Sidney Crosby knows hockey. Ferguson had his first brush with the industry as an exciseman, performing audits at distilleries all across Scotland. With the contacts he made, he then began working in sales for various distilleries, starting with the Chivas Brothers, the second-largest whisky producer in Scotland. Over a 12-year span, Ferguson estimates he worked at more than 40 different distilleries all over the country. Now a stay-at-home dad with children Daniel and Emma (his wife Eunice works in the health care industry), Ferguson decided to have a go at holding whisky tastings in the Okanagan. “It’s like a wine tasting, but a lot more fun,” he grinned. “I realized there was a lot of interest in malt whiskies here, but I found there was still quite a lack of knowledge. Ferguson believes whisky tastings could appeal to a wide range of people and situations – anywhere from corporate functions to office parties to private tastings. All it takes is a minimum of six people, and Ferguson will discuss a price, location, and most importantly, which whiskies will be chosen for sampling. He has already held his first session at the Armstrong Inn, with 22 people signed up. “I’m hoping to gauge it for all levels of experience – from people who know absolutely nothing about malt whisky...to catering for people who know a lot more. Ferguson can be contacted at tasteofscotland@telus.net.

Knights get win
Date: Dec 16, 2009
Entry: Trevor Fitzgerald says the shock of a coaching change was basically a wake-up call for the North Okanagan Knights. The Knights certainly had their eyes wide open as they iced the Penticton Lakers 5-3 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at the Nor-Val Sports Centre. The Knights outshot the Chase Chiefs 55-23 but fell 5-1 Saturday night at Art Holding Memorial Arena. “We played well Sunday and we outplayed Chase,” said Fitzgerald, who took part in the Junior A Vernon Vipers Christmas scrimmage Monday afternoon. “You can’t keep losing if you keep getting that many shots.” Fitzgerald leads the Knights with 22 goals and 39 points. “The change in coaches really hit home because it was the first time all of us had seen that happen. He (Dupas) really knows his hockey, for sure. Our goal now is to make the playoffs, and all we have to do is finish ahead of Penticton.” The Knights, who signed rugged 19-year-old Vernon forward Laine Keyes after Vernon product Kurtis Hagen left the team, improved to 5-26-0-2. Penticton, also an expansion club, dropped to 7-23-0-2. It was 3-2 Knights after two periods. Marley Keca scored his fourth and fifth goals of the year as the Knights beat the Lakers. Karson Holt (7th), first star Brodie Clark (4th) and Bryon Maxwell (6th) shorthanded completed the North Okanagan offence. Keyes took second star. Connor Tamai, with two goals, including a powerplay goal with 1:42 left to play, and Randy Finkbeiner replied for the Lakers. Chris Hurry made 27 saves for the win, while Kenny Quinn recorded 37 stops in the loss. The Kings begin a three-game Kootenay swing Friday night in Fernie against the Ghostriders.
