The students start training in September and continue until the end of October where they travel to Chilliwack to compete in three events. The students range from Grade 3 to Grade 6. The students have a great time and can not wait until the final meet at Cultus Lake in May.

Kent kids jump for Gold
Date: Oct 18, 2009
Entry: The students at Kent Elementary School participated in the Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart program in April 2009. They skipped and jumped their way through a healthy day. The students learned the importance of staying physically active as well as eating nutritious food. The nutritional snacks were provided by local merchants. The school produced their own skipping and basketball demonstration teams two years in a row. The students also learned to give back to the global community. They fundraised over $5400.00 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Skipping and basketball are now a part of the Kent culture.

'Potato Alternative'
Date: Aug 12, 2009
Entry: In February the District of Kent Fitness / Activity Centre administered a ‘fitness challenge’ to help motivate people to become more physically active and aware of the benefits of physical fitness. The challenge, named ‘The Potato Alternative’ – is the ‘alternative’ to being a couch potato. There were two sessions, the first session ran from February to March and the second session ran from April to May. Participants were encouraged to do both sessions; however they could do one or the other.
To complete the Potato Alternative, participants had to complete 26 visits to our gym or one of our fitness classes within an 8 week period. During each visit, participants who completed a thirty minute workout session would receive a stamp on their tracking calendar. When 26 visits were complete, they had a choice of a stainless steel water bottle or gym bag. Completing both sessions would have awarded participants with both the water bottle and the gym bag.
At the end of each session, participants who completed the challenge had their name entered into a draw for a first, second or third prize, donated by local businesses.
Our “Sweet Potato Prize”! We did a draw for 17 participants from each session to participate in a two hour cruise on Harrison Lake. One hour was donated by the owner of the Laroan, Shoreline Tours and Charters and the other hour was donated by the District of Kent Leisure Services. The cruise took place on July fourth.
Our challenge was extremely well received, and the selection of prizes encouraged participants to stay focused on their fitness goals. 103 people completed the challenge. When participants completed the necessary requirements, many kept their card so they could continue to collect stamps to keep them motivated.
This program encouraged everyone to maintain their fitness goals. Together we are creating a healthier community!

Agassiz Celebrates the Spirit
Date: Jun 24, 2009
Entry: The spirit of the Agassiz community was evident at the Spirit of BC Open House in February at the Fitness / Activity Centre. Mayor and Chief, and the Chehalis dancers welcomed everyone to the facility. Sports clubs and service organizations that make up our community hosted display booths to showcase their activities. Free yoga and belly dancing classes, story time for the children, face painting, a magic show and lunch were offered as well as an opportunity to participate in an art workshop with children's author and illustrator. Free admission was granted to the weight room for the day and many received the Olympic mascots, Spirit of BC toques and scarves and story books as door prizes. There was something of interest to all age groups and it was a great opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate our culture, our diversity and our community spirit.
