Winter Wonderland
Date: Dec 29, 2009
Entry: Another winter day in the South Cariboo has my family looking for their long underwear and snow suits. What should we do today? The coin is tossed, heads-we are off to Mt Timothy for a day of boarding and skiing, tails-it’s onto the groomed trails to explore the majestic Cariboo Mountain Range by snowmobile. Tomorrow will find us debating again, should we snowshoe to a quaint family restaurant for home style lunch or strike out for our ‘secret lake’ to do some ice fishing. The winter months are booked with exciting outdoor events for the entire family from the Great Cariboo Cross Country Ski Marathon, local hockey tournaments, snowmobile drags, and ice fishing derbies. After the sun goes down, we’ll round up the neighbours, bring their toboggans and GT Racers, and see who can make it to bottom the hill first. Bring your hot chocolate and we’ll have a bonfire to help keep everyone warm while the kids finish the day with one last skate around the lake.

Building a Soccer Park - four full size fields and a Clubhouse
Date: May 3, 2009
Entry: OMHSA - SOCCER PARK DEVELOPMENT
The 100 Mile House & District Soccer Association (OMHSA) is the governing body for soccer in 100 Mile House & surrounding area. Soccer in the area has experienced excellent growth in the past few years. In 1991 the association registered about 300 players and in the last three years our membership averaged 570. Soccer is the largest Sports Association in BC. Almost 40% of players are female, the highest percentage of female soccer participation in Canada.
With over 50 teams in 2008, we had over 70 coaches, plus additional volunteers helping with the many other required tasks. Furthermore 40 soccer officials participated to make the association a success. As a member organization of the British Columbia Soccer Association, we work closely with them so our programs meet the provincial and national standards.
Our team sponsorship program has always been successful – we receive tremendous support every year. One of our team sponsors has sponsored two entire divisions (20+ teams) for the last nine years, while another has sponsored our Micro program for four years now. In addition we have 27 other businesses that sponsor one team each. We feel that this says a lot about the strong community interest.
